So with my upcoming oil change would switching from my usual Mobil 1 5W30 to something else be a wise move to save my cam bearings? Cause I certainly dont have the money to replace mine in the future. I thought synthetics were better for the engine, thats why I put the extra cash down for it. Comments?

synthetic oil will not let bearings break in like they are supposed to do. it works that well.. you must let your cam/crank and their bearings wear in and create room for the synthetic oil.

i use synthetic as well, pulled mine apart and it looks fine... go figure..
as already stated you dont know what your talking about.


M1 is a good oil.

you do not need to change oils.




if your bearing is that bad I would try and get a scope or something to see what the rest look like and hope its only the first one.

dunno, maybe the same reasone the put 230 degree thermostats in the trucks and run the tranny cooler lines into the same radiator.....

do you have any idea how long a tranny last at 230 degrees??

Did you always warm up the car when you started it? Do you have a bad habit of reving it up when you fire the engine? Do you get on it sometimes when the engine is not quite at warm yet? What weight oil were you using? Was it all year round? Is the climate well below freezing in winter? is it really hot in summer? do you parke on a hill noramlly?

Something consistant and repetative must have caused it to go that bad if you were religious about your oil changes and have used synthetic from the start...

230 'stat is for emissions. Cars have been using integrated tranny coolers in the radiators for decades. The heat of the coolant is not vindicative of the heat of the tranny fluid.

In case anyone has been following my saga, I drove my car home tonight.
I ended up replacing just the front cam bearing and now we are running 20w50 oil.
My initial reaction to the new XE224/230 cam is simply "WOW!" You combine the cam with the headers and SLP exhaust and it just sounds great.
I never expected the throttle response that the AS&M unit is providing. It is instant and quick. I don't remember the stock unit feeling this way. It felt heavy.
Now I guess I have to wait until the break in period and figure out what to do with the programming.
BTW- I also put on LT4 valve covers, red powdercoated intake, powdercoated thermostat housing and chromed radiator hose with polished ends for looks. It came together nice.
Now I hope the engine holds up for a while.

dumb question but what do they sound like with a cam?

mine has a lot more agressive sound then my buddies trans am and it idles a bit rougher, so i'm wondering it had something done to it or if its just not running right lol.

I am sure mine is very mild compared to others, but it has a lope to it. Not like a Harley, but you probably get the idea.

I worked for a GM garage until about 1993 or so. I have seen or replaced more transmissions than any one person should be allowed to. The heat from the radiator may not be a problem on the old Turbo 350s and 400s but they 700R4 didnt like it. I saw trannies with 15,000 miles on them that had hauled a camper or a boat nothing huge snowmobile trailer or something and without an extra cooler the fluid was black and tranny slipping. When I changed my Z71 over from a 5 spd to an auto I didnt put the tranny through the radiator I bought the biggest Tranny cooler I could find and put it an inch from the radiator.

ya... any easy way of finding out if mine already has a cam in it? The previous owner had the car for a 1 year and didnt do anything to it.

It definatly has more of the harly sound and the exhaust is a lot loudner then my buddies f-bodies
