Oil Leak Chasing - 94 Z28

Hi-

I am chase a few minor leaks on my 94 Z28. It seems to leak overnight or after being parked for a few hours. Same pattern every time. IT is a 94 Z28 with the LT1 M6. There is a lot of oil on the back of the pan and trans area. I snapped a pic of the pattern on the ground

I have checked the top of the intake several times and it is dry. Pan gasket appears to be dry. I had thought rear main at one point but no clutch slippage issues. Any thoguhts?

Check the oil sending unit located on the top back half of the engine. Those tend to leak over time. Also the oil level sensor.

94 Z28 A4 known mods... reworked ported heads/intake. Cam, 3" cat back flowmaster. unknown PCM tune. still researching car. ...

1990 RS HO 305, TH350(shift kit). 4 barrel carb, Cam, Long tube headers.

Paul,
You won't necessarily have clutch issues with a mildly leaking rear main seal....obviously the seal is on the opposite side of the flywheel.

Mine leaks a small amount from the rear main and the oil drips come from the front of the bell housing. It doesn't cost the pan in oil.

I'd suspect the oil level sensor. They're plastic and a bit fragile and will break if you over torque it on installation...just a bit of warning if you replace it. Anyway, when mine failed, it coated the back half of the oil pan and the bell housing....it got places you wouldn't expect it. You can check the oil sending unit but I don't think that's it....

Good luck

I should have added that nothing in this area has been replaced lately, or ever for that matter. I swapped shorties for long tubes a few years ago and replaced the o2 sensors about a year after that. As far as I know, the sending unit is original. I will check there for starters. Thanks.

Re: Oil Leak Chasing - 94 Z28

I went under it today and found some things and took more pics.

What I am seeing is a minor leak at the level sensor in the pan and a leak at the drain plug for sure. I am thinking I will take care of these at the next oil change and see what changes. The leak does not appear to be coming from ablove the oil filter at all.

I also have a leak at the bell housing - in the pics - I was thinking rear main for this one, and a mystery leak at the front passenger side. On the front one, I have already swapped heater hoses and a power steering return hose as those were leaking previously.

Can you reseal the pan sender, or do you just replace it?

I'd just replace it....it usually leaks through the sensor, not our around the seAl.

I replaced the oil pan sending unit and the gasket on the oil drain plug.

So far no leaks. I will be beating on it this weekend so we will see how we do.

Thanks!
