Re: oil leak from the front

My front crank seal was leaking, pretty easy to replace. I know a lot of people have a hard time with the balancer. Honestly my biggest trouble was out to the new seal itself. It took many many tries to get it to go in.

I used a small pic to remove the old seal, pretty easy.

It's best to be sure where the leak is coming from before you start changing seals. There's 4 seals on the front that can leak: crank seal, opti seal, waterpump driveshaft seal and the timing cover seal. From my experience the waterpump driveshaft seal is the usual culprit. Your can buy a dye that is added to your oil and will show up under black light. Clean the front of your engine, add the dye and see if you can find the source of your leak.

If it is a seal, why don't you try either high mileage oil or try adding Lucas oil treatment. Both have extra swelling agent in them to help seal leaky seals. I prefer valvoline max life myself. Never know, could help save you from doing a job that sucks.
