Oil Level Sensor Question

Oil Level Sensor Question
When purchasing a replacement oil level sensor, I asked the dealer for p/n# 24507190. I was told that part number was replaced with p/n# 12579985.
When I got home and removed the old sensor, I compared the two to see what the differences were. One change is the new one is not metal, and there is a cutout in the casing to make it easire to unclip the electrical connector. Then I noticed another difference, the new sensor has a floating cylinder shaped part that is loose on the end. This has me worried, because if the old sensor is supposed to have this, it must have fallen off inside the oil pan.
Here is a picture of the two sensors. The one on the left is the new one. Notice the extra piece on the end of it.
Does anyone know if the original sensor also had this piece? If so, I guess I'm dropping the oil pan
Thanks,
Thomas.

The one on the LEFT IS CORRECT... THat's the same one that I got when I went to autozone to get a replacement... Cost me like $16 or so. Works just fine.. Even has an opening on the top so you can get the connector on and off easily now

The one on the left is the one I just bought, the reworked part. The one on the right is the OEM sensor I removed.
My question, is the old sensor supposed to have the cylinder piece that the new one has on the tip?

yes, it's supposed to have that cylinder on the end of it, that's how it gauges the oil level.
45 minutes after you cut the car off, the pcm sends a voltage out to the sensor, if the line isn't grounded, you have plenty of oil, nothing wrong, if it's shorted to ground, then the next time you fire up, it will light up the oil level low indicator. That cylinder floats in the oil, so there is no contact when the level is right, when it's low, the cylinder will short out the contacts in the sensor causing the oil light to turn on.
sorry to give you the bad news.

Thanks guys, guess I'll be dropping the oil pan sometime soon.
Any ideas on the risk of driving the car with that piece still in the pan?
