Oil Pressure question
Well, I went to the track last week and ran all-motor cause my window switch was messing up.
Whne I was slowing down, (RAPIDLY....the track has got almost ZERO runoff) my oil pressure dropped to 0 and "check gauges came on". This wasn't the first time this has happened when coming to a dead stop.
Am I guessing that this is just the oil pickuptube sliding forward?
I have 24 psi while idling HOT, 40 while cold, and 40-45 while cruising.
Stopping normally, it is no different then if I was idling, if it comes down at all.
I tried it today from like 3K rpms, to a screeching dead halt (yes, I said screeching, my ABS is out right now) and it did the same thing.
Oil Pick up right??

Re: Oil Pressure question
I have a melling high volume pump and i welded my pickup however when i slam on the hooks my oil pressure also drops to zero. I think all the oil rushes to the front of the pan and the pickup cant get anything. That check guages light scares me everytime.

Re: Oil Pressure question
No, my rpms arent diving in-line with my oil pressure.
As far as the oil pickup goes, is it just the tube that dips in to the botom of the pan....or is it like a small hose that rolls around.
Is something broken inside? I work at a car shop that does oil changes on the side so draining my oil won't be an issue or expensive by any means.
Is it most likely broken, or is it supposed to move around on the bottom of the pan?

Re: Oil Pressure question
The stock oil pick-up is a metal tube with an inlet screen/disk that press fits on the oil pump. It's common for this press fit to come loose and the pick up to fall into the bottom of the oil pan.
You can see it here in this drawing on Shoebox's site; it's the lowest part on the engine assembly: http://shbox.com/ci/oil_pan_bolts.jpg

Re: Oil Pressure question
You'll need to pull the oil pan to reinstall the pick-up. Chances are it will fall off again. The oil pump can be removed and you can take the pump and pick-up down to a shop and have it tack welded in place.

Re: Oil Pressure question
Sounds good. I just wanted to make sure it would reinstall...I didn't want to have to put in a new pump.
Next step...getting the time to do it.

how dangerous is this at the track? I know my brakes are shot so when I go to the track tomorrow should i be careful about this? Mine just started doing this the other day so im kinda worried about taking a new motor to the track like this.
anyone?
anyone?

well... you can drive on it but whenever your oil pressure dips below 10psi per 1000rpm then you can run into trouble. personally i would only drive it, but would not do any hard acellerating, braking or cornering until it is fixed.

anyone had this problem, but never under acceleration? I think it may be a bad electrical connection somewhere, because it doesnt make since to only happen under heavy breaking... if I come to a complete stop (ONLY a complete stop, not heavy breaking or anything, only when I stop) the oil pressure drops... I am thinking tune instead of that tube now.
