Oil pump drive gear

Hey all, I was trying to source a new gear for the oil pump drive for the LT1, can a gear, OEM or better be purchased for the drive, or is it non-serviceable and only to be replaced as an entire unit?

Re: Oil pump drive gear

Your best bet is to reuse the stocker. Install it into the Herron Performance aluminum drive housing. That's what I've been using and it works great - no problems.

Re: Oil pump drive gear

The drive gear material needs to be matched to the camshaft gear material. If the cam/gear is a billet, then a melonized or composite gear should be used. the harder billet gear on the cam will wear out the bronze gear.

The stock unit (1103868) is supposed to be melonized though there are some reports of non-melonized gears. GM has a melonized gear you can buy separately and install on your existing shaft (19052845); you can use a composite gear (comp cams) though the the ID is larger than the LT1 so will need to have it bushed.

Re: Oil pump drive gear

Yes. Are you running a higher volume oil pump; that seems to be what kills the gears and would push you towards a composite gear and/or billet drive.
