Old Engine?

Old Engine?
Okay my A4 transmission on my Formula is broken. So I am replacing it.
However my concern now is the engine. I have 120K miles, I know there are plenty of people on here who have 180-220K plus miles but if something were to go wrong with the engine what would be the most likely failure to take place?
Also is rebuilding an "affordable" option? Or is there such thing as a partial rebuild like maybe just replace what needs to be replaced?
EDIT: I plan on stressing this motor.

Well, you could tear it down and check the bores. If the ridge and the bore isn't too big, you could just "bottle brush" the bore and do a ring/bearing/gasket job.
On the other hand, if things are too out of spec, it'd be cheaper to rebuild in NOW, than after a catastrophic failure.
