WTF is this purple and orange stuff I found in the oil pump screen?

There are two small chunks of the Fel-pro oil pan gasket, not sure how they got torn off. There is also some very thin purple and orange plastic like fragments that I have no idea what they are. They both appear to be similar material, hard and brittle like a paint coating of some kind. It appears "rolled" and easily breaks into pieces and it is definitley not RTV.

There was a generous amount of this crap in the screen. Someone please tell me what this might be.

Hard to say, but just may be what caused your mains to be oil starved. I wonder if any of this stuff is in the oil gallerys?

Just out of curiosity, can you post up some pictures of the entire bottom end with the oil pan off?

He is rebuilding the entire shortblock which will require re-turning the crank, re-honing new bearings, new rings etc.
Might have the motor back at the end of next week.

Yeah, we are looking at around $800.00 including bearings or so.

I had the exact same crude on my oil pickup screen after a cam change.
I found it because I too had to rebuild due to a rod bearing failure.

It sounds like you know what you where doing so I would pull it apart and make sure it wasnt something forgotten like rod cap on backwards (I foget things sometimes too) I am not sure who did your machine work but I would have someone else chack the bad rod etc just incase the clearences where incorrect.

I think I'm going to continue leaving shortblock assembly to the pro's. In the end the labor for assembly isn't that much considering machining costs.

The experience would be nice, but I think I'll start with some old POS motor I don't really care about.

Did you ever identify what the purple and orange stuff is?

Did you replace or at least disassemble and completely clean the oil cooler prior to assy? Dirt is the #1 cause of new engine probs.

Have those oil holes chamfered on the crank and check the clearances on every thing.
Looks like they may be on the tight side.
