Krause and I were researching the smog issue in months past. Sorry I haven't been around, I finally got my computer back.

The trick to pass smog lies in the amount of overlap in the cam. Hotcams can pass easy. The 224/230 has about 53* of overlap which also can pass with a computer tune. Any cam "should" have a computer tune to bring out it's best.

Also, the heads and the low lift flow will also affect the amount of overlap scavenging that can increase HydroCarbons. Also, add in an CAI and good headers/cat-back, then you will also increase the scavenging and HCs. It is possible in Cali to pass smog, but you should have your computer tuned.

If the twin turbo set-up by Banks or Turbolocity don't pan out by Summer, then I too will be jumping on the N/A set-up. While everything is apart, just get the heads cleaned up and if you can get them ported... do it!

Remember, the cam is just the "brains" of the entire intake, compression, and exhaust flow of the engine and each bolt on will affect the characteristics.

I also read about the stock timing chain, just save and upgrade with the LT4 timing chain or something more durable than stock. You will be increasing the power output and will fatigue the stock set up by pushing it's strength to the threshold. You won't be happy when the chain slips and smacks a valve trashing your heads and pistons.

So with a basic pcmforless tune, the 224/230 with shorty headers, catback and exhaust shoudl pass emissions?? How does the 218/224 compare to the Hotcam, is it bigger, more aggresive?? Sorry for all the questions, but with the cramped Z28 engine bay, I only want to do this once and be emissions hassels free.

The 218/224 is very close to the hotcam... at that point the hot cam kit is a better value. You won't get much performance with the extra 4* duration. They usually hang the exhaust open for longer due to restrictive exhausts. Sounds like you're set to go with your set-up.

The 224/230 is about the limit with a good tune in Cali for smog. Technically, only CARB approved products can be permitted. Crane offers one with good lift.

It's good that you are doing research before you jump in. This is something you only want to do once as you said.

Don't forget the timing chain and all of the seals and gaskets.

OK, am I correct in saying that this deal is the regular price, and that only the pushrod bonus ends March 12?

Thanks

Do you lose any hp by increasing LSA? Maybe a 115 or 116.

Krause could answer that... but typically, the wider the LSA the smoother the idle. Yes, you may lose 3-8 HP at the top RPM (depends on heads, rocker ratio, CAI, Cat-Back, Headers, etc) but you will get a much smoother idle.

Also, the wider LSA reduces overlap... too much overlap can drop raw fuel down the exhaust registering has high HC on the smog machine.

That's the trade off...

You can offset that a bit with 1.6 RRs on the intake valve and 1.5 RRs on the exhaust. But again, the wider LSA makes the car more "driveable".

The narrow LSA will get you more power and for many can still be driven on the street. It will increase overlap and smog HC will rise.

Again, the cam just helps the engine maximize the other components mentioned above. May want to read David Vizards book on cams... it is pretty good.

That is what I figured. That was my reasoning of wanting the increased LSA, so it would sound more stock (but still healthy) and have a better idle and driveability.

Thank you.

Talked to them today since mine had not come in yet. I was told they ran out of cams and had to reorder more due to the response. I have a tracking number so it is on the way.
