P0336
Car is a '96 Formula. Got a code P0336, which is cranshaft position sensor performance. Unfortunately, it looks as if it is the code for an opti going bad. Anyone have any other input?

Re: P0336
You mean the book definition, that says check for reluctor wheel or sensor damage does not refer to the opti? I'll be happy if it just need a new ckp. No, I haven't checked anything yet, as the light came on last night, and I pulled the code to see what it might mean.
Speedy, you're one of the more informed guys on here, and I appreciate any further input you might have, as well as anyone else. Trying to not have to replace an opti in 100 degree heat, if you know what I mean.

Re: P0336
The code sets when the PCM looks at the signal from the crank sensor and sees that the CKP duty cycle is outside the expected limits. The reluctor is the 4-tooth wheel that mounts on the crankshaft, right under the timing cover, and the sensor is the magnetic pickup that plugs into the bottom of the timing cover. They are not talking about the Opti.
Could be the reluctor is loose on the crank, the sensor is hitting the reluctor, there's magnetic material accumulating on the sensor, there is nearby high voltage signals causing interference on the circuit, etc.

Re: P0336
After doing some more research, I realized they were talking about the crankshaft reluctor wheel and sensor. I also noticed oil leaking from around the cpk, enough to drip on the driveway. Could the oil have caused the dtc?

Re: P0336
Not sure about the oil but the inputs need to be checked and the connection to the PCM also.
If all all is good to the sensor and the connection is good from the sensor, must be the sensor. Yeah.
