Paging shoebox,nighttrain66, or head expert...

I discovered that the banjo bolt hole on the head is ROTTED/CORRODED. I had a board member put the heads back on, intake back on, rocker arms, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

NOW, he said I have 2 choices:

Pay $100 for new gaskets and ahve the motor torn apart AGAIN OR

Find a helicoil insert/time sert for the banjo bolt.

GM ****ed up royally by making 18 threads on a 1/2" bolt, which USUALLY has 20tpi on it.

So now what can I do. I don't want to go to every machine shop in town KNOWING that they don't have this helicoil/time sert that fits that banjo bolt.

Another guy at a machine shop said that I coulld weld the hole shut on the head, buy a tap drill, buy a custom tap (1/2" bolt, 18tpi) and drill a new hole in the head, and then put the bolt back in without a helicoil. (as I won't need it anyway in that case)
The problem with this method is that I don't think the dealer has a portable welder on hand to weld the hole shut with the heads on the vehicle, which clearly means Imy only option is to spend $100 I don't have and buy new gaskets.

Do I have ANY other options?

You can't reuse head /intake gaskets.

Never heard of anyone with this kind of problem before. If you cannot find a heli coil or time sert, maybe there is some kind of adapter fitting that could be used. It will probably be a difficult search to find what you need. Pulling the head, welding and retapping is a solution and may ultimately be the easiest in the long run.
