Ported My MAF (Pics)

Well I got to thinking and thought, i wonder if that screen thing on the MAF would really stop anything, I mean, if the air filter can't stop it, would that screen? I didn't think so, so I went to the library and found a book that was telling me about the MAF and it said by taking out the fins and screen in the MAF you can flow up to 182 CFM. I don't know about anyone else but I didn't want to spend $400 for a "high flow" MAF sensor. I also read that the fins main purpose was to slow down the in coming air to cool it so the MAF won't malfunction. I don't know if that's true but what ever. So I went to the store, bought a dremel tool, then started to port. Here's a step by step of what I did along with some pictures I took while doing it.

1) Took the MAF out then seperated the two sides.
2) Then took a hack saw and sawed off the majority of the fins as you can see in the second picture.
3) Got a nice sharp and big toothed drill bit type thing that took the other majority of the left over metal away.
4) Then took the dremel tool and grinded it down a little smoother after using the huge, chunk eating drill bit.
5) Used a sander on the somewhat rough surface that was left
6) Used a small wire wheel also on the dremel on the whole thing
7) Took a small buffer with the dremel to shine it up
8) Put it back together

That was about it. It took me a little over 2 hours to do. I definitely noticed a faster throttle response, but as for power, I don't know because i can't drive it. My car won't shift out of first. Yes I do know some people will not like this but think of it this way, it's not your car. Last but not least here are the pictures. Enjoy!

FYI - that 'screen' is meant to straighten the airflow, not filter.

Re: Ported My MAF (Pics)

Congradulations you just made you car extremely hard for someone to tune. And you gained almost no power. Yay

Looks like you did some good work! I smoothed out my TB & air foil with my dremel!

Why is that, the MAF would still be seeing the same Volume/Temp coming in...

The calibration will be way off though.

Re: Ported My MAF (Pics)

I is calibrated based on it's original crossection and housing, as soon as you grind on it atall you completely destroy that calibration. You may see a temporary power gain because the engine will be ingesting more air than the MAF is reporting, over time the PCM will be able to see this as lean O2 values and will compensate.
Your stock MAF was FAR from a restriction and you will find the vast majority of knowledgable folks here will avoid aftermarket MAFs like the plague. You needed to spend a fraction the time you spent doing this researching it first and you would not have ruined a $125+ sensor.

MyShibbyZ28 I must say that this is a good post. Good pictures, and looks like good work-- Well documented procedure. I am no expert about the MAF so I can't (and won't) disagree, or speculate about the content of your post.

They only people that ever defend maf porting seem to be ones that have already done it. In some cases, if you can find a good tuner it will help out. But that is not an easy task and is next to impossible with a mail order tune. The calibrations are way off just as stated above.

Oh and just the obvious, how could the volume be the same? You ported it to let in more air...right?

Thank you matt65 for not giving me crap, although i think you wanted to. If you didn't than i thank you. I would also like to point out a couple things. I said above, "Yes I do know some people will not like this but think of it this way, it's not your car." Please keep that in mind. Second, I don't plan on tuning this, I'm not going into bracket racing or anything hardcore. Then lastly, if i have any problems i will let people know for future use.
