Power window issues w/ '94 Firehawk
In February, I bought a '94 Firehawk. The window in the driver's
door was loose. It would slide front-to-back with
ease.
A few weeks later, I removed the door panel to perform a quick
fix of what I thought would be a simple issue. I found the pin
that controls the front-to-back movement of the window was no
longer attached to the window frame.
To get a better idea of what I'm talking about, look at the
Shoebox (r) photo below:
view of driver's door
Toward the back of the door [left side of photo] there is a
channel running at a 75 degree angle from bottom to top. The
frame of the window glass has a small pin that rides in that
channel. Since that channel is at an angle, the window glass will
move from front-to-back as you raise the window... got it?
Well, in my window, that pin was broken off the window frame. I
had to pull the window toward the back of the car as I raised the
window. If I didn't do it just right, the window would bind and
generally do a great job of upsetting me.
I tried to weld that pin back on the window frame. It worked for
about 10 minutes. I tried it two more times with no success.
I guess I need to replace that frame, right?
The dealer lists that frame thing as a current part, and it isn't too
expensive. The first time I was in that door, I tried to remove
the window and frame to do the welding... I was unable to
remove the window while the regulator was still in the car.
I figured that if I could get the glass out of that frame, that I may
be able to get the frame out of the door without removing the
regulator.... maybe?
My Haynes manual says that I need to drill the rivets to get the
glass out of that frame. My window already has a few scratches
in it, so I was thinking about replacing that anyway. If I remove
that glass, do you think I'll be able to wiggle/twist/tweak that
frame enough to get it out of the door?
If I get that frame out, maybe I can weld a washer on the front
and back of that frame and keep that pin attached this time.
Anyone have any comments/suggestions on how I can fix this
window and maintain my sanity?
