Punched Hole in Cat - what went wrong
Besides the fact that one of the bolts holding the y pipe broke off, i punched a hole in my cat about the size of a silver dollar (maybe a lil bigger than that) and i realy dont hear much difference at all. Is this too small ? how much more should i nock out for a louder, beafier sound ? O - any suggestions on what to do with the broken bolt on Y pipe

When you gut your cat you get rid of ALL the "honeycomb" material inside, not just a hole. It takes some work to knock all of it out, but it will eventually start breaking up in big pieces to shake out. The reason you noticed no sound difference is because you didn't gut the whole cat. Take the rest of the stuff out and you will notice a difference, guaranteed!

I wouldn't try knocking the honeycomb out while the cat is connected to anything. You will need to hit it pretty hard for everything to break up. Plus, you'll need to get the wire mesh out that holds the honeycomb together.
I agree with the earlier post, just buy a higher flow cat. You'll make the environment a little cleaner and you won't always have that no cat smell.

i do plan on getting a high flow cat as soon as i order my headers, is this "no cat smell' really terrible? O, im going to take the y pipe and cat off tommorow becuase im going to attempt to drill out the broken bolt. Any suggestions in doing this? also, do you guys think i should bother gutting out the rest, or just leave as is ?

ok, im guttin that beast, any advice when it comes to drilling out that bolt, its the hardest of the three bolts (bolt farthest from firewall), im not really sure how im going to get a drill up there, im thinkin just a really long dirll bit.

Just gut it like XXSaint said I loved the sound after I gutted mine about a year ago, but that setup's long gone now...Also, I didn't notice any smell from guttin' it, I probably wouldn't care if I did though, who gives a ****.

Gut it! I gutted mine while it was on the the car. took about an hour to do. Its hard to get the last few big chunks out but well worth it. Watch out though...i got a hell of a rash from laying in the stuff that came out of it.

i love the way mine sounds, especially with the cutout open....as for doing it, take off the y pipe and beat the **** out of the honeycomb, someone said earlier about laying in it and getting a rash, OH YA.... be careful, i would be sure u do it in a well ventilated area, it can be very dangerous to inhale.
check my webiste, in the links area, for a link to a video of my car, u can hear the exhaust on that clip.

If you only remove a little bit, you will end up crushing the honeycomb around the area blocking flow in a big way. If your going to get started on the project, remove the Y pipe and gut the whole thing completely.

My god, its done and it sounds like a beast! its really loud, the only thing i dont like is the raspy sound at high RPMS, im not sure if its cause i got flowmaster muffler or if its just the lack of having guts in the cat.
