I dropped the engine/trans from the bottom with a jack under the tranny tailshaft and one under the k-member. If I now remove the tranny from the engine, will the engine/k-member assembly still balance on the jack? If not, what's the best way to balance it until I'm ready to put the engine on the stand?

Rather not find out the hard way!

The best thing do use would be a furniture dolly. I used one on the motor, one under the trans. The motor and K-member did balance on one dolly.

But at this point I have a jack under the k-member, so I can't swap it out for a dolly. I guess I could hook the engine hoist up somewhere.

Yea just hoist it up if you have one, then slip the dolly under it. That way you can roll the assembly around on the dolly when you need to. Makes it so much easier.
