Just noticed this thread. I had to replace mine 3 times as well. It was a PITA. Anyways, whenI pulled mine apart first time, that is what it looked like. In fact, I was told by a buddy who is a mech. that the big heavy black part of the seal is the part that actually seals, and the yellow thing is just a secondary wiper to stop any of the tiny drops that might sneak by the first seal.

Janny, thanks for the encouragement It's good to know someone else has done this SEVERAL times before they got one to seal. Like I said before, mine only appear to seal for about 500 - 600 miles of driving and then they start leaking

One other thing, I understand that GM dealers sell a "complete" seal kit for the LT1 timing cover, which includes ALL THREE seals,(the water pump seal, the optispark seal and the crankshaft seal). Does anyone have a GM Part No. for this "kit"??? Or know what it may cost???

Another thing I ought to add:

My mech looked at the seals and he based on his observation, concluded that it was in my best interest to pay more money and get the seals from GM. The after market seal that I put in the first time did not look like a quality product according to him. I wished I had listened to him the first time.

I'm not aware that GM sells a "kit". Aftermarket companies like Felpro sell a timing cover set that has all the round seals and the timing cover gasket.

For the 3 round seals and the cover seal, expect ~$18 GM wholesale. I think the Felpro set is $10-$11.

GM numbers:

1993-1994 front cover opti seal 10128317

1995-1997 front cover opti seal 12552428

1993-1997 front cover crank seal 10128316

1993-1997 front cover water pump seal 10217886

1993-1997 front cover gasket 10128293

water pump gaskets (2 required) 10128343

Janny, your mechanic sounds like a very wise man The reason I asked if there was a "GM" kit is because I will definately use only GM seals on my timing cover the next time I do this, and yes, I will replace all three(3) seals.

Shoe, what can we say Everyone on this board would be lost without you Thanks SO MUCH for those GM seal part numbers!!! Again, you are "The Man"
