radiator acting weird.. spits coolant back
hey i just replaced my radiator for the SECOND time this month it wore a hole near the battery.. looks like the thing melted? anyways i changed the radiator out and filled her up with coolant and went to drive.
two minutes into the drive my camaro was already in the red on the temp gauge. this morning i determined it was a bad thermostat so i took it out and filled her back up with coolant and now it runs in normal temperature operating range.
BUT here is my problem. now the coolant overfull is acting very strange. it will sputter and steam like the coolant is boiling wtf?
i took the radiator cap off and filled it up to where i can see the coolant level about an inch from the top and then filled up the overfull resevoir to the designated level. run the car and turn it off then after i turn it off i can hear sputtering coming from the coolant overfull, sounds like popcorn and lots of steam coming out. sometimes itll gush out coolant too so i figured its too full? but then it just pumps out steam sometimes. i dont understand what is going on.
anyways does anyone know what could be causing this? and then also does anyone have information on the proper way to fill the radiator up to the correct level?
i have to drive this car to work this morning and am VERY afraid of it with the way it is acting. i dont want to ruin the engine so looking to resolve this tonight. thanks

Most likely you have air trapped in the system. Shoebox has a good write-up on the proper burping procedure:

Re: radiator acting weird.. spits coolant back
havent tried a new radiator cap yet.
i just bled the system thinking everything was great.. it got up to operating temp and now the dang thing is spitting coolant all over my garage floor
kind of afraid my head gasket might be blown but didnt look like it when i ran it without the cap on (when it was cold).
i just shut the car off and it was overflowing out of the top of the overflow with coolant.. after about a minute it turns into steam and bubbles.
after it stopped i opened up the radiator cap to peek in and there is no coolant visible.. it spit it all up on the floor. why would it do this once the engine warms up?
it took half a gallon to fill it back up to the top of the radiator
if the cap was bad then what would the symptoms be?

Re: radiator acting weird.. spits coolant back
Need to go to the shoebox writeup, bleed it again. New cap. Stop driving it until you get it all bled and no more air, before you do need a headgasket job.

Make sure you have the hoses connected properly to the overflow tank and the TB return and the radiator. My friend had these reversed and your system won't pressurize.
