Rattling at low rpms...tranny?

Whenever Im at low rpms...below 1.3k rpms...somethin rattles, but once I pass 1300 it stops. I've been told it might be my tranny. Is this just a minor thing, what exactly is makin the noise and whats the best way to fix it? Its only when Im in gear too, in neutral its fine.

yeah, you got to be a little more specific as to where the noise occurs. could be a rattle in the trunk as far as we can guess.

Its coming from the engine compartment. I dont know if it can be heard outside the car, but I assume so cause its fairly loud inside.

Mine rattles from the tranny unless I have the clutch disengaged at idle, it hasn't caused me any problems yet.

Yea...it seems to be louder when Im lettin the clutch out slowly in 1st, but its done it in 2nd as well, so its based off of RPMs. I did find if I barely give it any gas, to where rpms are climbing slowly it doesnt really rattle, but if I give it some gas, it starts to rattle.

My transmission sounds like a rock tumbler until i get it engaged and spinning.... I just about had a heart attack when i heard it and called the manufacturer ready to send it back. D&D tells me that due to the high tolerances of a performance tranny, it's going to be loud... I have a hard time beliving that when i listen to it, but it hasn't fallen apart yet...*shrug*

have you checked for loose heat shielding. seriously, my fiances mazda was making roughly the same noise as what you are describing and i found it to be the heat shield had become loose and was rattling against the exhaust manifold.

maybe it has nothing to do with what you are talking about but it is worth a look.

Do you have cats? It sounds like the "guts" of your cats have broken loose from the casing causing the noise. That is of course if youve still got em.

If they come stock on the vehicle, then yes i do Otherwise I dont...I just hope its something cheaper than a clutch problem.

Take a rubber mallet and hit the cats gently(give em a good hit, dont dent them or anthing though) a couple times and see if one of em doesnt rattle.

Sounds like if thats the problem then there would be rattling all the time...not just at low rpms...but its worth a check.

Re: Rattling at low rpms...tranny?

If the "guts" of the cat havent broken up, the flow of the exhaust at higher RPMs(1500+) will actually "pin" the innerds of the cat against the walls, therefor not letting it rattle at the higher rpms. Thats what happened with mine or at least what I came to the conclusion of what was happening with mine.
