rear oil pan stud discontinued...help

So last night when I was rushing to torque down all the oil pan bolts/nuts I snapped the rear stud off. After doing a search I learned that it is inserted in the rear main housing? Anyone know exactly? Will I be able to use an easy out and thread it out, then use a bolt. I called the chevy dealership and soon discovered that the oil pan stud was discontinued. any one have any experience or knowledge that might help me secure the oil pan to the block?

gmpartsdirect still shows the number for the stud as good (available), as well as the whole housing (which includes the RMS and the studs).

It is a screw in, and to be honest, when i was putting the rms back on my motor i really didnt see any reason that it has to be a stud; unless there is a ground or something like that that goes there. A bolt should replace it just fine.

does anyone have any advice on how I can get this thing out? With a grinder I got the surface of the broken bolt as flat as possible, but the drill bit stills runs right off into the pan. I tried welding a nut to it but my mig gun can only get within about 4" of it, making the welding very hard and painful as I get burned by the excess . I even tried using those alden grab-its (a commercialized e-z out). No luck there. I am really trying to avoid pulling the rear main housing, I put the transmission in because a friend was coming by to help with my tuning problems. maybe a bit with an air hammer that chisel a groove and then a flat head screw driver? Anyone have experience with pulling a broken bolt/stud in very strange up-side down spots.

Works sometimes. If you have a dremel tool use the small cutting wheel and put a slot in the stud. Unscrew with a flat tip screwdriver.
