Re: rebuild
as far as the heads go if your going to change the cam you have to change the springs and you may as well upgrade to 1.6 ratio roller rockers. As far as cams a lot of people on here are going to tell you that you need to change the rear gears and put in a 3000+ rpm stall before the cam swap. Also you need a cold air intake and headers+catback exhaust to support the cam or again you wont get the full potential.
when it comes down to acctually picking out a cam i found a list on LS1tech.... it doesnt have every cam on it but i has a good list as far as i can tell and it has some good pointers.

If you are keeping the heads stock then the cc503 is a very popular choice. If you do the cam then some stronger springs for the higher lift would be necessary. Also while you're in there I would upgrade pushrods, lifters, guideplates, and upgrade to 1.6 rockers. I'm probably forgetting some things but it's early and I'm pretty sure somebody else will come in here and chime in.

I think you missed the part where his car is an M6 so no need for a converter, but I would agree and do some gears.

Re: rebuild
If you are a performance enthusiast like most of us, I would build a stout motor once. I started out like you wanted too do a stock rebuild with a cam. Then decided too build a higher compression 355, big cam, stalled,4.10 gears, lt headers, suspension, full bolt on nitrous spraying sob. If I would've done it all at once I would've saved myself thousands in labor but I changed my mind daily and so the bill reflected it. If you have a goal set in your head build it once accordingly and in my eyes there's no such thing as too much power.

Re: rebuild
The price of a stroker kit vs a stock rebuild kit is minuscule. What costs is the block work. Most shops will do a block for under 500 .that's decking, boring, honing, and clearancing for a stroker crank. No replacement for displacement says the guy who drives a puny 355. Good luck however you go. These cars are a blast and imho can be more than a handful for any ls1

Re: rebuild
A good topend is the replacement for displacement. WAY too many guys "save" money on the topend because they are too concerned about the bottomend. All the air comes and goes through the heads.
Few stroker b-bodies will run with my car and the ones that will tend to have the same heads, or spent a LOT more for no more performance.
Why do you want to "rebuild" the bottomend? If it aint broke you probably would be better off leaving it alone than throwing a cheap kit at it.

Re: rebuild
I had my stock rods "redone" stock crank turned and micro polished, and speed pro 30 over hypers. I am pleased st the durability so far but know for a fact it wont hold up too the punishment my end goal will give it. I ran 10.8@125 1.55 60' with stock heads milled 20 thousandths. That was also with a 150 shot. On straight motor I run mid to low 12's consistently. I doubt the 5 ci plays a part in this but like dwayne said it is about the top end. Stock heads with beehive springs 1.6 rockers, stock size manly valves, and a bump in compression along with full bolt ons is what shaved 2 seconds off my e.t from stock along with my xfi280 cam and a tune that took over 2 months too get right.

Re: rebuild
There is one banjo bolt on each head and are a pain in the *** to remove. I have resorted to cutting the line in the middle and splicing them back together with appropriately sized rubber tubing.
