Can putting low octane fuel in the car do any longterm damage? If I buy a 97 z28 or something, is there any way I can check to make sure there wasnt damage from bad fuel?

yes and no, thats why they have knock sensors. Predetonation will straing the bottem end, piston rods, everything. Predetonation will cause excessive cylinder pressure before TDC which is what causes the extra strain on everything. But after you get predet the pcm pulls timing. I don't think there is any real way to check for the extra strain the engine has endured.

anyone else have any comments on the above?

i do a mixture usually...depends...i used to put 93 in it...and got some gas mileage readings.....then i used some 89....got some gas mileage readings....then used some 87 and got some readings....all the same driving...and all within 1 mpg of each other...there really isn't a difference i don't think...so i've been running 87, 89, or 93 for the past 15K miles and no problems...fas mileage stays the same with each fill up and power is the same...no one is gonna feel 1-2 rwhp....if you are goin to the track...fill up with 93 or sunoco 94 or somethin....JMHO

my dad told me that he sat down with a buddy of his who runs a few stations or somethin or is a manager for a bunch of them...i dunno..but he said its all advertisement, there is not difference...he even told us not to waste the money on the "higher octane"

I've never used anything lower than 93. I use Sunoco 94 if I can afford it, and if I really want to spend money, Sunoco 100

nothin but the good stuff!!! 94 sunoco, i once put low octane in my car and it realy didnt like it, it had alot of hesitation.

and i dont know if any one mentioned this but the higher the octane the longer the fuel burns in the cylinder

Um, no.

Do this.

Dyno with 93 octane, empty tank, then fill with 87 and redyno...Our comps have "low octane compensation" tables for a reason...Pulls timing, causes KR...

Plus, random inspections by the state help, too.
