Question Relay box Wiring

I'm not too spry with the relay wiring stuff. However, I hot wired a relay which was not in use to run my new csi water pump. To do so I had to hard wire the switch (coil) side of the relay. One side was wired to ground the other to the ignition fuse.

Here is my question. Why do all the grounds disapear in the relay box when the ignition is turned on? How can I find a ground in the relay box, is there one? I was kind of hoping to keep it really nice and clean by wiring everything in that box. Does anybody know how I can get away with that.

Also a couple misc questions. Why doesn't the ignition use a relay? Is it hard wired to a switch. How does that work? What other ways have people wired up their electric water pumps?

Thanks for the help!!
