Rev Limiter or some other problem?

Rev Limiter or some other problem?
I have a 94 z-28 automatic with about 80,000 miles on it. I have a problem with the car that I thought would have been fixed. WHen I floor the pedal from a standstill or even when moving, the engine sputter once it hits about 5,200 RPM. The engine is revving then dies then revs back up. It's a pretty violent proccess. My head get's thrown back and forth. I replaced the optispark, and the coil in the car just recently. Am I hitting the rev limiter, or is it a bad spark plug, fuel injector? has anyone had a similar experieince?

Its not the rev limiter, that isn't till somewhere around 6200 and it would just feel like the car isn't going any faster. You won't hit it in an A4 car so don't worry.

Sounds like the optispark. I would check it to see if maybe some moisture got inside it or whatnot. I've also heard of several incidents with brand new optis being bad.

COuld the transmission be involved? When I rev the engine in neutral it doesn't seem to have a problem. WHen the engine sputter it seems to be right about when the transmission should be shifting?

I just looked at a 100% stock profile for the 94 and the fuel cutoff is 5886 rpm first gear 5805 2nd to 6th with a resume at 5875 1st 5794 2 to 6. Woulf definately jerk back and forth if you ar banging those limits. Basically it cuts the fuel off the turns it right back on.
So are you in that RPM range or at 5000?

I also once had a bad MAF that acted the same way but as i recall it was around 4500 rpm. Maybe worth a look to make sure your MAF is plugged in well and if you got a volt meter you might check the output on the wires to the MAF.
I think 1 is ground 1 is 12 volt and 1 is 5 volt qith the key on.
