Riddle me this, why are there different style LT1 Harmonic balancers ???
I just don't get it .... And i think this is the reason for me not being able to fit my MBA balancer cover.
Mine looks like this:

While some look like this:

You see the difference where one has the extra 'ears' with additional holes ??
What is the difference for, and why ??

It's probablyb ecause gm was using that same balancer in diffferent engines, and decided to use a more massed and easily produced one... that would be a guess.

All LT1's are not the same... one is from the early engines, and the other is from the later engines.... maybe a 95/96 dividing line. Same with many parts.

Starting in 1996, they were improved in that they had the built-in holes for using a common balancer puller (or even the same puller used on the hub) to remove the pulley. Perhaps they listened to complaints that getting the pulley off was not always easy. The holes are not that robust, but they don't need to be. All it takes is a small amount of equal pressure all the way around to make the pulley pop off.

GM is capable of recognizing their mistakes and (at least partially) correcting them.... unfortunately, they seem to get a lot of opportunities for correction.

Ok well that explains the differences and my major trouble mounting that MBA balancer cover which is NOT gonna mount onto a pre 96 harmonic balancer.
Don't understand how they can sell it under 93-97 Fbody cover on their website
Tried to email them but their sales and support email addresses both bounce ... Shame

Interesting....I have a '92 LT1 Corvette.
My original OEM balancer does not have the extra "tabs" and holes and the OEM '96 LT4 dual-mass balancer that I just got doesn't either.
Was this a non-Y-Body thing or specific to the '96 LT1 motor only?

Re: Riddle me this, why are there different style LT1 Harmonic balancers ???
Word came back from MBA.
They said that most balancers have the 3 tabs for mounting. So i could either send it back or get another balancer.
Eventhough they do offer to take it back (which is pretty good service) i think i'm gonna try to make it work as it would cost me quite a bit to get that thing in the USA and be without it while all my other pulleys have the similar styles covers.
I am dissapointed in MBA for not mentioning this upfront as most Fbodies do NOT have the one with the 3 tabs, so MANY people ran (or will run) into this very same problem.
So, unless i can find one for a good price (used, cause i will NOT pay another $80 for a proper balancer) i will try to make a fix for this problem in the form of an alloy thin perfectly round plate that goes inside the balancer with the bolt mounting holes for the hub bolts and 3 extra bolts with thread for the cover.
Since it will be perfectly round (machined) it shouldn't give any balance problems.
Any other ideas or comments ??

Yup, and paying about $6.25 a gallon for premium, go figure !
No wonder i can't afford getting a new Balancer with the 'tabs'
