roller rocker noise

hey if someone can tell me if this is normal.. I know i Know they say all roller rockers make a sewing machine noise... But my kinda ticks more so on the driver side...

They are the 1.6 crane gold self aligning.. I already did 1/4-1/2 past zero lash and same sound... Its probably normal and im just going crazy, but someone please verify.. THANKS....

They sound way too loud to me. When I had those rockers, they were pretty quiet and I have the comp Pro Magnums now which are louder and they are way quieter than yours. What method did you use to make sure you were on the base circle when making your adjustment?

I think I know what your problem is, the RR are hitting the valve covers!!!!! Had the same problem with a friends of mine ZZ4 with the same covers. Take them off and look inside them for shiny spots.
You have to push them up( towards the intake) when you tighten them, and DON'T tighten them too much.I think in the end he had to put 2 gaskets on each side.

Good luck

Yeah, they sound a bit loud to me.. And I like the first poster have pro mags so I'm used to the sewing machine sound. Take your valve covers off and see if they are hitting them. You can trim up around the supports to make them fit. I damn near cut mine completely out and they still hold a tight seal.

Yes it sounds like they might be tapping on the covers or a little loose. I am running stock covers with my 1.6 promag's and they are not that loud. I did have to loosen my valve covers up because the rockers did hit when my covers were tight all the way. Try backing out the valve cover bolts; with the engine running, if the noise gets quieter then they are hitting the covers.

A few of other things your can try:

Increase your lifter preload. Crane, year ago, issued a Tech Bulletin recommending that to help reduce valve train noise. I learned of this on another website but I was never able to track down that bulleting. However, I didn't do an exhaustive search for it. A few months ago, I installed Scorpion 1.7s on my son's 96 LT1 Vette under stock valve covers and they cleared the covers without any modification. I used 3/4 turn of preload. Because I am running different heads with longer valves, I couldn'tr get the needed clearance using the stock covers, so I went with 1/4" taller ProForms. BINGO!

Next this is to install thicker valve cover gaskets. That'll raise the covers and may give you the needed clearance.

Recalling similar posts on the 8 or so other Forums I visit, Crane and Pro Mags are the rockers that are most complained about for noise. In the past, I've run both Crane Golds and Pro Mags so I know from personal experience about the noise. From what I've learned, it was the noise of Crane RRs on the LT4 that caused GM to modify the Knock Module to prevent false knock detection.

Scorpions are the quietest and what I run on my 388 and my son's 96 LT1; they are truly quiet.

Hope this helps.

One more thought: It could be the self aligning tabs causing the noise when they side swipe the valve stem tip. CompCams doesn't recommend them for performance applications anyway; My son and I are running NSA Scorpions.

hmm.. well they are self aligning.. i already went out there and re adjusted all of them on the driver side.. and i also loosened the valve covers as well. Noise is there there... the ticking i guess im just going to accept that it is normal.....

There is no loss of performance or anything... I has new ls7 lifters and the roller rockers are new as well. ...

it is hardly noticeable while driving since the exhaust takes over... but sometimes i can hear it..

I guess ill just have to crank the radio up LOL!
