Your 1997 (assuming that is what you have, based on your screen name) is OBD-II. That system provides a misfire count, by cylinder.

did you check the Idle Air Controller solenoid (IAC) ??? sometimes it gets gunked up and it will make your car idle badly , its the black thing on the bottom passenger side of the throttlebody. If you take it out and clean it with throttle plate cleaner and a toothbrush it will sometimes fix it. I just did that this weekend and it got rid of the stumbling my car does when its cold . Just be careful with it dont move the piston on it up or down or youll misalign it.

ive always heard about the iac but ive never seen it exactly... does anyone have any pics of what it looks like. my car (94) also has a problem with a funky idle... like its missing, but its just at idle. so im still kind of confused as to what is causing the rough idle... how long does it take to take out the iac? is it difficult to do???

you gotta take off the throttle body , its not too bad . The most time will be wasted on getting the damn water hoses off the t/b. I went ahead and did the t/b bypass while I had it apart since it never gets that cold here anyways. go to this site http://csce.uark.edu/~jgbertr/rb/4th_gen_tech1.html

it has the t/b bypass and iac location on it , this is the site I used to do both . It didnt take me more than an hour although I had a friend working on the bypass while I cleaned the throttlebody and IAC . You might wanna get a t/b gasket if you think yours may be worn and your not near a napa or something.
