Saw an Odd Intake Setup on an Impala

I went to the Super Chevy Show in Michigan this past weekend and I came a across a LT1 equipped Impala with a cool intake setup. I don't have any pictures but I'll try and describe it to you:

Instead of using the intake elbow and rubber reducers on the intake going to the throttle body...this guy had it set up to where the K&N filter was like literally immediately outside the throttle body. Starting from the throttle body, he came out with a small rubber reducer, maybe an inch wide, then he had the MAF sensor on there, then another reducer, maybe an inch wide, and then the filter. I think those '94-'96 Impala's have a little more room than we do between the intake and radiator though. But it was cool setup. It would make changing/and or cleaning the filter a cakewalk. Anyone else done something like this? Besides the ram-air guys.

This used to be popular with TPI cars, but the problem that you run into is heat. You have to find a way to isolate the filter from the heat of the engine.

Yup, sure did. Except the Impala that I saw used a clear plastic material to isolate the filter from heat. Almost like a plexi-glass window seperator. I wish I would've taken a picture of it. It was very nicely done.

Yea, that was the first picture i came across. I have a similar setup to the one you are talking about on my SS. They have many different types like the Black, Clear, Smoke, Polished. They are kind of exspensive, but work really well alone or with the ram air hood. They have done tests and stuff to see which intake for the B-Body, and the SSRI or RAISS(same thing but different) flow the best.

I got some pics of the car at Super Chevy including his filter setup. Talked to him for a while, too. Haven't had a chance to take 'em into the lab yet so I don't know how well they turned out.
