Shocks/Struts and Strut mounts; How Much $? Do I need them?
Looking to lower my car. It's a 93 v6 with a lot of miles and I think the suspension has never seen a replacement part. That being said, I did a search on here for shocks/struts advice. Most seemed to say that replacing the spring AND the shock at one time is the way to go. My question is, should I also go ahead and get a strut mounting thingy (not strut tower brace) that everyone says always needs replacing when this kind of stuff is done? Should I get the mounting bracket parts (nut that everyone says breaks off) along with the shocks and springs? What should I look to pay for take off shocks/struts for the front and rear? I have springs lined up, I just need info on shocks/struts and the strut mounting pieces especially. Can I get that part off a parts car? What should I look to pay for the mounting piece? Lemme know. Thanks,
John

I don't think you would need any extra hardware. The nut that can be hard to remove is on the shock and you will get a new one with the new shock. (that's right-you have shocks-no struts)
SLP usually has take off shocks for cheap. If you want something like Bilsteins, they will be ~$300 for a set.

This picture is a fully disassembled front shock, including the upper and lower seats, dust cover, top nut etc. If your car is on the rough side, there's a chance the upper seat (lower right corner of pic) may be pealing the rubber coating off, causing a lot of rust. In that case, replace the upper seats. Unfortunately they are fairly expensive from a "dealer" and you might want to order thm in advance form one of the discount GM parts people that give us good prices, like Jason Cromer or Dal Slabaugh.

You may or may not get all of the hardware from SLP when you order the takeoff shocks. I was told "your lucky if you do" and that they were not selling them "as pictured" on their web site.
Also my car isn't on the rough side yet but I believe water finds its way to the top of rubber mount then has no place to go. The top nuts were badly rusted to the point they had to be cut off.
At least check to see at Auto Zone, Advance Auto or where ever you get your parts that they have them in stock. May save you some time if you can't reuse yours. I think the smaller top pieces were around $8-10 apiece. Can't remember on the lower ones for sure.
I also put some grease around the nut before putting the shock back up so maybe it won't be so hard to get off next time.
