some ticking
i have a 97 transam with 78k miles with lt1 v-8. the ticking noice is coming from the drivers side rear of the engine bay... may be under the valve cover or by the exhaust manifold im not sure... or maybe further down by the exhaust system.
i have looked in the exhaust leak section but i really just dont know if it is... it just doenst sound like its a exhaust leak. what it really sounds like is a piece of sheet metal tapping agianst somthing else... its a very faint tick.. not a uniform blunt tick.. if that makes sence...
some thoughts would be appreciated. i plan on eoither fixxing it this winter or tackling it this summer yet..

Re: some ticking
First thing to check is exhaust leaks. I had the ticking sound in that area and found both exhaust manifold bolts had snapped at the rear of the driver's side manifold.
Make sure the Y pipe joint is tight.
I also had a ticking sound from the front of the engine on the driver's side. I used a stethoscope to locate it by placing it on the rocker stub with the engine running with the valve cover removed. I had a damaged cam shaft and roller. Both had chips in them. Sounded exactly like a valve tap but everything was adjusted properly.
If you have an exhaust leak, you may see a white powdery substance araound the leaking area. Make sure all bolts are present in the manifold. They sometime loosen and fall out.
Hope these tips help.
