Spark plug guidelines.

It appears that everything I thought I knew about spark plugs is completely messed up. Frankly Im confused so Ill make it simple and to the point.

At what compression, HP, displacement, etc, etc is a change in plug gap, heat range, type(copper, platinum) needed to optimally run in an NA car.

Is there a hard fast rule to go by? Are you safe with any plug and gap? I need to rule out my spark plugs themselves as the problem for fouling in less than 3000 miles...
