Spark Plug Install

Ok, I have the drivers side of the block done (cyl 1,3,5,7) and to get at those I had to remove the header. What did you guys do to get at the passanger side plugs (cyl 2,4,6,8) Any special tool or something? I really don't want to have to take the other header off. Thanks.

I replaced all 8 spark plugs without taking anything off. It took about 8 hours. Watch out for Plug number 8!

It is really easy to get the all of the spark plugs from above unless you have tiny arms. I strongly recommend getting a piece of rubber hose to screw the spark plugs back in!

Use a swivel and a few extensions to get to them from above, and good luck! The passenger side took about 5 hours to do.

Do you have headers? The headers are the main problem, i can't get clearance with the spark plug socket...it just hits the header so theres no way i can get the wratchet on it.

I think you'll have to remove the header... but what ever you do don't take it to a shop, well not chevy. They wanted $1000 to do the change on my Formula. It took me about 2 days (probably about 8 hrs total) to change the plugs though

It's not that bad, once you accept the fact that it's going to take some time. I've got BBK Shorty headers, and it helped me to remove the altenator and swivel that AIR (?) tube over towards the middle. I believe I got all of them from the top with just a short extension. Have fun!

One of the things that helped me to do this was to unbolt the pass side engine mount and lift engine 2 inches up using a jack under the oil pan( with a block of wood seperating them of corse). You will get more room on top that way. When you do this jack up the oil pan a tad to allow the engine mount bolt to come out. Alternator comes out of course.

Just remove the y-pipe, starter and altenator first. It's worth it.
