Stall or cam

Hey guys Im kinda stuck in the middle of the road here. Car is a full bolt on 94 with 4.10's and a 2800 stall. Car also has Hot Cam kit installed minus the cam. I'm trying to figure out if I should go the cam route or get a Yank 3600 stall. My budget is 2k. I will not be doing the labor ( space and time is the issue there ) I can get the cam installed for $600 or with springs for $800. I understand if I do cam only I can only do the Hot Cam. Which im fine with b/c its a nice proven cam over the years. I have also looked at doing a custom grind to get that extra 15-20hp. Now I could do the stall as Im not super happy with the 2800 fuddle thats in there now. I know its not the most efficient converter.
All said and done the cam will take up 2k budget, I also factored in a extra 500 just incase so budget is really 2500.
Now the converter all said and done will be 1200.( assumeing I dont need madz28 to retune for that converter) I figure 800 for the converter, 200 for install. Then another 200 for fluild and gasket/filter kit.
What do you guys think? Car runs real well as it sits. In cool weather it runs in the 12.80's 107ish mph. A cam should get me solid in the 12's at 109ish where i figure a converter will to with the same mph and power.

A plus for the cam is that it will add power all the time where as the converter will just be a benefit on the track. But at the same time Ill be saving some coin and replacinf that fuddle Im not to in love with.

Why must these choices be so difficult lol

Re: Stall or cam

I would have to do the cam and springs !!! because of the more hp and tq.... the more tq your motor makes the stall flash will go up also... (stall is appx by how much power the motor makes)

Re: Stall or cam

Yes your right . The trans and converter where the first mods I did thanks to a circa 1994 GM sun shell failure. As the car went from stock to full bolt on with a tune I can feel the stall flashing more. Is it a 3600 stall, no. Im really trying to make the right choices. Also with the converter that leaves me room to upgrade my ls1 brakes to the c5 sized conversion, H&R wheel spacers to get my 10 spoke ss's even with the body and new drag radials. All though I heard you have to run c5 calipers so you can run there larger pads to get full coverage on the rotor. I wanted to stick w/ my ls1 calipers though, so that may not wise investment...

Im really leaning on doing the hot cam I think

Re: Stall or cam

well with the higher stall you will come out of the hole harder!!! but if you drive on the streets going over speed bumps are fun because you have to get on the pedal so u can get over them lol I still say cam and springs

Re: Stall or cam

stall because a cam REALLY needs a stall to work right.
A stall also helps with the rpm drop at the shifts so do not think of it strictly as a launch improver.

Re: Stall or cam

Stall before cam......
My hard headed friend did a cc503,LTs,1.6rr,etc. The car runs terrible until the top of second gear and is a full second slower than my stock cam bolt on m6 Z

C5 calipers are identical in dimension to ls1's..except for the corvette cast into the side. Corvette brake pads fit your calipers...

Re: Stall or cam

Ah thanks bw_hunter. Are c5 pads larger then the ls1's? If so they fit and work properly in the ls1 calipers

No, they're the same size. I mention using C5 pads because there are a lot of compounds available. It seems that some corvetter guys actually race thier cars instead of just polish them..chuckle.

Re: Stall or cam

hmmm ok, I asked that because I see alot of guys complain that with larger rotors there is not full contact from pad to rotor..

I don' know what to tell you. The pads are interchangeable. If you compare c5 rotors to ls1 rotors you'll see they are larger in diameter which places the pad farther away from the rotor center, increasing the mechanical advantage. The height of the swept area of the rotor is the same......
There is always full contact between the pads and the rotor.....I assumed you meant swept area
