Starter intermittedly doesn't crank at all, then randomly fires just like normal?
I have a 96 LT1. When I put the key in and turn it to the on position, everything lights up and dings and whirs like normal. Then I turn it all the way to crank the starter, and there is no change. No dimming, no cranking, no clicking, no sound, no lights flashing. It's just like the key is still just sitting in the on position. If I do this 5 or 10 times over a 30 sec. to 1 min. period (it's been getting worse), finally the starter kicks in just like normal. It cranks fast and the car fires right up and runs fine, like there was never a problem.
This problem started arising shortly after my fuel pump went bad. My car had been slowly taking longer and longer to crank. So gradually I wasn't ever sure there was a problem. Then within a few days it got so bad that just before I took it to the shop I had to crank it 3 or 4 times for 5-10 seconds to get it to fire, maybe even more the very last time. Maybe I burned something in the starter during those last few days of excessive cranking? Or is this just a coinsidence?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
