Starter keeps grinding on flywheel, need thoughts
shim is in the starter, typically the starter will turn the motor over a couple times and then just spin in the air, or it will just crunch on the flywheel, regardless it won't turn the motor over enough times for it to fire up. Flywheel is fine and is not missing any teeth, I visually inspected it. I suppose it could be the starter, but I don't really know, the starter has all of it's teeth as well and appears to be fine upon a visual inspection. The fact that it does turn the motor over a few times leads me to believe that the starter is probably fine, but I don't know what else it could be, any suggestions?

Was the starter ever run without a the shim for a short period of time? If so that'd be enough to break the starter loose of it's casting. Maybe something is loose or disconnected within the starter casting.
Either that or you have the wrong shim size. Good luck man.

Actually yes it was ran without the shim a couple times, there was no noise intially. it stands to reason that maybe this is the case, it got broke because of incorrect mounting. Thanks for the thought on possible cause
