Starter wire routing originates from rear or front?

Starter wire routing originates from rear or front?
As the title states does the starter wire harness go down the rear of the engine or do they go along the intake and down the front and along the engine to the starter. The engine is in the car now and the harness will not reach the ecm. I went down the back of the engine, I now suspect it should go along the intake and down the front. Any help please I looked for pics but found no clear ones. Thanks everyone,
Tom

There are two leads for the starter. The purple wire comes from the engine harness (which is routed through the firewall) and the larger 12v+ lead is wired directly to the battery via cable that runs along the passenger side frame rail.

On my '95, the wires were routed along with the knock sensor wiring, and ran straight up the passenger shock tower, and then back to the PCM area. I had to extend mine due to the close proximity of my header tubes after I scrapped my stock exhaust manifolds. Look for a clip on the passenger side shock tower, should lead you in the right direction if we are talking 93-97 at least. 98-02, then I can't say.
