Startup problem, is this my starter?
At startup, my 95 Z28 will crank repeatedly before kicking over and starting. Sometimes it takes a good 5 to 10 seconds of cranking before it will start. However, if I let it crank a few times, stop, then try and start it again it will fire right up. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it because some mornings it starts on the first crank and others I have to crank it, stop, then retry it.
I have zero experience with starters so any help with this is greatly appreciated. Can you lose a tooth or something off a starter?

If it cranks everytime you try it,its not the starter. Its your fuel pump check valve. You need a new pump.To verify this turn the key on and off 2-3 times before you crank it.It should fire right up then.

Just my 2 cents...
I have almost the same exact problem. My Fuel Pump went out in the spring of 2006, replaced it and this spring started acting like yours is acting. Mine is more religious though...if the engine's cold it takes about 3 key turns to get it going (or 5 seconds of cranking, which I hate to do) and if it's warm-hot it fires on the first key turn. I haven't ruled everything out yet as it's not "totally" irritating to me, but before you go and spend $$ on a pump and $$ on an install (or time doing it yourself) get you fuel pressure checked to see if it has enough pressure, and if it does have enough pressure, (in my case anyway), it's "not" the Fuel Pump...it's "something" else.
Some things I've tried: new fuel filter and new battery (not much...I know), but other things it might be..as I'm told are: starter, clogged injectors, coil/wires and/or opti.
Good luck and if/when you remedy the problem let me know PLEASE!!
