Question Straight pipe or new cat?

I have a 96zA. I think my drivers side cat is plugged. I keep getting code P0420. I went by an exhaust shop yesterday and got a qoute of $110 to repl. cat and $40 to remove it and put in a pipe. He advised against the pipe only saying it would make that side of my engine run rich and would be fouling plugs. Is he right? I want to go the cheapest easiest way, but I also dont want to hurt my car? Al Bundy (Married w/ children) needs your guys help!

Are you talking about taking off one cat and keeping on the other? If that's the case, then don't do it. If you are gonna take off one, you need to take off the other.

Do either both of them, or none...

Also you have emissions? Because if you do, you need the cats to pass....

If you have emissions testing then keep your cats or if you have a somewhat strict inspection keep the cats. But if those are not a worry then get rid of BOTH of them. You will need to get O2 sims. Those will run you about 70 bucks for the pair. Other than that, NO it will not make it run worse! Removing the cats will only free up horsepower and make it run better!

It will not make it run rich or lean. The rear O2's are only to tell you if the cat's are running effecient or not. It will throw a Service Engine Soon light until you get the sims but it will nto effect driveability or harm your gas mileage.

Pretty much what everyone else said. Just don't get one taken off. Actually, I had to get only one taken off and had to get the other done about a week later. If that case, it's ok, but you don't want to drive your car ALOT with only one cat on there. I didn't have a choice though...long story. Anywho, you'll be happier with the sound difference. It's much better!
