Strange 12 bolt (bent axles)

I bought a Strange 12 bolt and since I put it in I have have had a vibration at high speeds.....figured that a wheel weight came off or something. After checking the easy things, I raised the rear of the car so that I could watch the rear wheels in rotation. They both were not true....so I pull both wheels off and look at the axles as they were spinning....they are definatly both bent. I have NO idea how this would have (or could) happen as it has only seen street use. The roads I have driven on are smooth, but with axles that large in diameter, I have a real hard time believing that even a hard hit (pothole or something) would even bend these.

I bought the rear end used, but it was aquired from a personal friend not some unknown source. The rear was purchased new by him just last year. 4000 miles on it when I bought it, and I have only put ~550 miles on it as of now.

The rear is smooth at highway speeds.

has anyone experienced anything like this at all (bent axles in ANY form on a 12 bolt)?

Thanks, Jason

We had a 12 bolt that did the same thing only on 1 side, check the bearings and race when you pull the axle and then check the center section also on the bearings.

Thanks for the reply man, I appreciate it

Did the axle actually turn out to be bent, or was it just the bearings that needed to be replaced?

Thanks, Jason

Well we caught it in time so it was the outer bearing that was pressed in the housing ends, when your axles are moving like that it will eventually tear up the splines were the axle meets the gears. 12 bolts are easy, push in the axles, take out the c clip that holds them in (when you see this little clip that holds your axles from sliding out you will be amazed that it holds together) The clips are found inside the center section. whoops! First there will be a pin in the middle of the housing that fits between the axles that needs to be removed first. Not really difficult but just messy and SMELLY let me know if you need more info. i wouldnt drive it as you are stressing possibly your center section.

Just thinking about it more, it doesn't sound like the axles are bent. You would definitely (from my experiences) feel a bent axle at highway speeds and lower. Sounds like something is failing/not sturdy at a certain speed...

How high is highspeed?

Racin, yeah I am familiar with C-clips...however the strange 12 bolts (and Moser) do not have C-clips.

Thanks for the info, I will check it out.
