suppose you had...

Suppose you had a 96 SS and you wanted a real fast, but stock feeling, daily driven car..... what would you do?

Sorry I'm a ford guy but just out of curiousity, is there any nice supercharger kits for the LT1 that makes good power and still very streetable.

Also, what else with this cars do you need to upgrade with added power? How are the manual trannies? how about fuel?

A similar car COULD be in my future at some point and I'm just curious. Thanks guys.

Re: suppose you had...

Just to clarify a little more, something in the high 11's, would tickly my fancy. hell even solid low 12's.

Re: suppose you had...

the t56 six speed trannies are amazing...built to hold 450#s of torque factory. there are guys running them into the 9s with some upgraded internals.

as for the engine:
rebuild the motor, forged pistons and any other upgraded internals you can afford, lower the compression to about 9.0, mild cam and install a set of AFR heads (or port the stockers or get some ported lt4). then install a 8# blower and you'll be well into the mid 450s at the wheels with decent reliability.

Re: suppose you had...

well if ya want a STOCK feeling
then keep it stock and ad CAI cat back DR's and maybe msd ignition or delteq swap then spray it when ya wanna go fast
150 shot plus your mods will atleast get you where you wanna be if not better
while still feeling stock

Re: suppose you had...

The ATI, Vortec, etc. belt blowers are supposed to be good for ~100hp over stock. All have kits for Camaro's.

Re: suppose you had...

Just bolt on a sts turbo, 52mm throttle body, catback exhaust and a cai and you will be running low 12s easy. Might wanna add some 3.73s also

this is more what i'd gettingo at. what kind of times would you expect to run with one of these kits? tearing open the motor and building it isn't practical for me... that's why i'm only running 12#'s in the Lightning. Can the motor handle a blower running like 8#'s or something or would it be best to do what an above poster said and build it up.

edit: any links would be good too.

Re: suppose you had...

I always would have thought you could take an LT1 or LS1, slap a blower on it and run a high 11 or something. maybe just doing a built motor would be better? there's a 400 rwhp ws6 around here that pulls like a raped ape.

Re: suppose you had...

the weakest part of the rotating assembly is prolly the pistons
rods and crank hold up to at least 400 rwhp
and then the 10 bolt rear its gonna blow just a matter of time if your gonna be modding

Re: suppose you had...

The thing that sets the LT1 back on S/C boost is the high compression ratio. Contact Procharger and they'll explain to you in detail how you can boost up LT1's. They come from the factory with about 10.3-10.5 compression, definately not ideal for S/C and the most you should run on them stock with a intercooler is about 8lbs. This is coming straight from ATI's LT1 specific catalog and information. Now for instance a 5.0 GT, its like 8.5 compression you can run tons of boost. The higher compression ratio with the added boost gives you a higher rate of detonation, which is like tumors to a LT1 engine, once you get enough your dead. I highly suggest contacting ATI Procharger or at least getting their LT1 information kit. They have a supreme knowledge of S/C kits, however they are pricey. But you pay for the highest quality kit in my opinion. They have ways of safely turning up the boost on even stock LT1's. For instance they ran a S/C kit on a stock LT1 a while ago, around 94-95. It had an up[graded clutch and 3.73's to handle the power or something they said. It ran 14.3-4 stock and like 12.1-2 with those mods. Pretty damn good considering it didnt have headers, 58mm TB, ported heads/intake, or a catback. Let alone suspension mods. I think you'll have a mid to high 11 sec car with no problem once you contact ATI, I think that of all the S/C systems I have seen their's is the best designed, and safest way to run boost on an LT1. Good luck.

Re: suppose you had...

Get a Procharger for it, P600, P1SC, D1(@6psi), some quality LT's, RR, 58mm TB, stg 3 clutch, MSD, Tunning and a good catback. If you dont get into the high 11's something is wrong. I wouldnt think about changing the gears b/c if you do they are to short and you wont get full advantage of the boost. And then just pray for the 10 bolt to hold up...........b/c it wont.
