n2ceptor.... master of the search engine. Yeah, I've noticed.

Perhaps you should give lessons.

wether it be royal purple, amsoil, mobile 1...etc., the obvious answer is that you should look into switching to a synthetic oil because it provides over all better protection through heat and wear than your old dino oils. the viscosities and temperature breakdowns overtime in synthetics are much less than that of your old dino oils. thus providing better protection now and over longer oil change intervals. if cost is a factor, consider that you really dont need to change a synthetic oil at 3k miles. i change mine at 5k. probably dont even need to do it then. extensive research (from what i have read and have been told) shows that synthetic oils are performing well beyond 10k miles (not condoning this long of period between oil changes, simply making a point). with dino oils, after a few thousand miles, you find that the polymers start to break down a lot faster and provide less protection. and just fyi, the first number in the oil viscosity rating is your starting temperature viscosity. i would say that a 5 weight viscosity is good for starting engine protection. the second number is the viscosity of the oil at operating temps. the "w" in the middle classifies the oil as a winter weight oil. the reason people say not to use mobile 1 5w30 is due to its tendancy to be a thinner oil. for good protection for our engines with mobile 1, a 0w40 is a good choice. their 40 weight is equal to a regular 30 weight. as far as other brands are concerned, i'm sure a 5w30 or 10w30 is a fine choice for good protection. also, make sure to use a good filter. stay away from fram. k&n make a good filter. so does m1 (some ideas). hope some of this helps.

ps- these statements are not meant to create any arguement. this is merely a representation of the facts as i have understood them.

Re: Synthetic Oil

M1 5w-30 is not a bad oil or particularly harmful just that for the same exact price and even in the same brand you can get better results with another viscosity so why use a oil proven to be not as good in this application. I have seen UOAs for it in other applications where it worked very well for a single 15K mile interval, but that was not an LT1 it was a VW 1.8T yes a turbo and 15K miles and it was good. On the RP thing I have read bad things about the street stuff shearing down to a thinner grade fast, the race stuff is supposed to be good.

Re: Synthetic Oil

In 3 pages, did anyone post dyno results?

A local dirt track engine builder found 5 - 7 hp switching from conventional to Royal Purple. Strangely, though, the gains weren't immediate. It was a 7500 rpm, 650 hp 350 that was their dyno mule. After switching to sythetic, it gained nothing at first, but picked up ~2 hp per dyno pull over the next 3 pulls.

Re: Synthetic Oil

If you look at the "thread" I found posted earlier in this one, its shows this...

They have just run tests on a FF 1100cc Racing engine and here are the results:

15W50 = 127.9 HP @ 9750 RPM, 75.8 Ft#'s @ 7300 RPM
(Racing Oil)

5W40 = 131.6 HP @ 9750 RPM, 77.7 Ft#'s @ 7400 RPM
(Racing Oil)

0W20 = 134.4 HP @ 9750 RPM, 78.9 Ft#'s @ 7400 RPM
(Advanced Development racing Oil

The lower viscosity shows a 5% HP gain and a 4% Tx gain.

The new 0W20 ADP Racing Oil is $11.73.qt. Comes in a 5 Liter (5.28qt) container.

The other Silkolene Full Synthetic racing oils (10W50, 5W40, 15W50) are around $8.50/qt. packaged in 5L containers.

2. Although I like the higher weight 15W50 Mobil 1 for Racing applications, I would not hesitate to use the Silkolene 0W20 Full Sythetic ADP Racing Oil.

although some oils do provide slight performance gains, base your opinion of what kind of oil to get based on your specific driving needs. if you have an everyday driver, you might not want to put oil in your car that is $11 a quart for an extra 2-3hp. i'm not saying go cheap, but go practical for your specific needs. you can buy a 5 quart bottle of mobile 1 (or some other brand) which will provide you with excellent protection for every day applications for $20. especially if you change your oil ~ every 5k miles. if its horsepower that your looking for, you can pick those up in other bolt on or internal mods. your money, your choice. just make sure the oil company is reliable.
