taking of exhaust manifolds on a 97Z, shortcuts?
I'm trying to get off the exhaust manifolds on my 97 z to punch the cats and change the plugs, wires and clean up the engine compartment. I don't have a lift so underneth space is limited? anybody have some secrets to get these off? Thanks

Do I understand correctly, you are taking the exhaust manifolds off to change the plugs? That's more work than just changing the plugs and lots of potential for bolt/stud breakage.

First off, you will not gain anything by gutting the cats.
Second, you don't have to take the manifolds off to take the cats off.
Thirdly, only one of the cats is near the manifold, the other one is underneath the car.
Fourth, as stated above, taking the manifolds off to change the plugs is alot more effort than just changing the plugs. As a matter of fact, the plugs usually have to come out before the manifold can be taken out.
All that being said, if they have to come off, there is no trick...just unbolt them. I think the oil dipstick tube has to come out...have fun getting that thing back in. Also, there is an EGR tube connected to the back of the passenger side manifold that can be a real B*tch....good luck.

I'm taking them off to plug the egr tube gut the cats change the plugs put on my otvc wires and clean up the engine compartment as well as paint the manifolds. Already have the intake and the engine front off to change the opti and paint as well. I do have my computer tuned for the cats to be gutted by Ion/

You may have a real problem with OTVC plug wires and stock manifolds. Your wires are going to be laying right on the manifolds. OTVC wires are generally used with headers.

If I were you and you have to take the manifolds out (in your opinion) I would get a new set of shorties, mids, or lt's sense you are already going to have them off. I had to take mine off for an exhaust leak to change the gaskets so i just decided to get the headers now. Oh yea taking the manifolds off without a lift is hard. All I had was a couple of jacks but it can be done.
