Timing advance and retard.. could i do it manually?

this is more of a general question. would it be dumb if i advanced my cam a tooth or two? i want to have my power a little more towards the low end. on the LT1 i know the spark firing would be in sync with the cam since the opti runs off the cam. but i'm also thinking of doing this on my beater, and on it the spark firing is done by a distributer cap. if i would do it on my beater would i have to advance the distributer with the cam or could i leave it alone.

if i leave it alone will the engine be all out of wack?

thanks guys, and especially if you could help me with a my other POS! thanks!

Not generally a good idea because you might get into interference problems between the valves and the piston. Cam timing adjustments like that are usually done in small degrees, not by "tooth".

A tooth is like 10-20 degrees[way! too much]
Offset 'keys' are usually used for a degree or 2...
