Re: Tips on pulling LT1 out

Don't pull it through the top, did it once on mine, and never again. I helped a friend pull his lifting the car off the k-member, much easier, relativly speaking. Just make sure your brake lines and all the wiring harness groups are clear and don't get caught on anything. There are some good tech articles out there on pulling it from the bottom.

Re: Tips on pulling LT1 out

now wait just a second
i have done this 3 times and it is not hard at all

the motor is fully assembled from oil pan to fuel rail minus exhaust and accessory brackets and all that junk
maybe a 1/2hour and you need a friend
presuming that the motor is already broken down.

i dont feel safe lifing the car off the k member at all
but thats just me

I've done it both ways, out the top and out the bottom. Out the bottom is easier, but out the top is straight forward.

Get a "Happy Hooker" from either Pep Boys or AZ don't remember which one. Pull the accessories off the front, including the balancer, hub can stay. Take the bolts out of the ABS to move a little if necessary, remove rad, leave air cond in frame and don't break lines, same with power steering pump, support tranny with a jack, leave engine all together unhook everything and pull out turning the nose to the driver's side as ya are pulling. Simple as that.

Re: Tips on pulling LT1 out

I did it out the top. just remove everything around it and remember how to put it back together. I had to twist the engine sideways a bit to get it to come out of the engine compartment but it was no biggie.

soo uhh, heres tip #2: youre gonna probably have to disconnect the AC lines. dont breathe in the freon.

#3 when removing the radiator/ac condensor dont lie underneath the car. oh yes, there will be antifreeze.

hope thats helpful

If ya just take the compressor off and let it lay on the K member, then take the motor mounts off ya don't have to spend the money to recharge it.

Re: Tips on pulling LT1 out

So, you guys were able to pull the engine without having to remove the condensor?

Re: Tips on pulling LT1 out

Easiest way (im actully suprised i have not many have done this)

Jack up car.

Un do tranny x-member, d/s and torque arm. Drain or plug the plug the end of the tranny
From motor do engine mounts, accessorys and bracket, harness exaust, WP.

Put the host on the motor about center of the intake

With the tranny ON, it will tilt back and come staight out the top. Swear

I have done it about 20 times with the tranny off and you have to twist the motor and whatever, but i did it one with the tranny on and WOW its so easy.
Takes me about 2 hours now
