The discussion ..... I believe.... was about a stock car. I could be remembering wrong....but there is a good bit of difference between headers and no headers....especially higher rpm's. Atleast that is how my car reacted to headers.

I've seen speeds listed anywhere from 155mph on a camaroz28 to 163mph on a TA. Couple of the test tested the TA with lights down, one got 163, the other got 161, then they did lights up and one was 159 and the other 157...4mph both times cause of headlights. They tested a Z28 too and got 159mph out of it.

That is pretty good...I didn't know they were that fast stock. Was that for 6 speed? I don't think my auto (with stock gears) would have gone that fast....but maybe I just let out too soon and i'm not dumb enough to try it now.

The TA's that went 161 and 163, and the Z that went 159 were all six speeds. Highest test I remember for an auto was 157, I believe. They're pretty dang fast, with headers, cat back and an exhaust they can pull a little harder...the limiting factor is there just isn't enough power in 5th gear at 5400-5500 rpms to pull any more and not near enough power to pull 6th gear.

Its important to note I've not had my car above 130mph. I have riden in two LT1 cars to top speed. 1 was my friends auto car and it pulled to just over the 155 mark on the speedo the other was friends 6 speed car that pulled to what appeard to be the speedo stop it looked like about 5mph past the 155 mark....The cars get to 150 pretty quick but those last 5-10 mph take their sweet time. I wouldn't recommend it at least not on public roads.

For what its' worth, everyone I know with a 4th gen and z rated tires had 163mph speed limiters. They just upped it to 255 with the HPP3.

I am shooting for the 200mph mark with my 86 Trans Am within the next few years.

I've seen that 163mph limiter mentioned many times in this post but I have never seen it in writing...

California?? 20miles straight? Desert?? Night? two lane?? sooo that was you who made the six 360* turns after I passed you by that night huh??
I doubt it. I was solo that night. If I had done six 360s at 150+, I think they'd still be looking for the seat cushion. This was in about 95.

Ever been to Barstow?

Top Speed

LT1's with 155 mph speedometer, which came with z rated tires, have a 255 speed limiter, LS1's in 98 came out with a 163 mph speed limiter, I just read it in the car and driver magazine where they tested the new LS1 in a white 98 trans am and it did 163 limited by the computer. Hope this solves it for everyone. Thanks Also Car and Driver feb of 93 results for the 6 speed formula vs 5 speed cobra vs 6 speed z28 top speed results are:1994 Formula: 152
Cobra: 137
Z28 : 154

Feb 99 Car and Driver Results Z28: 158 (WHAT HAPPENNED TO 163)
MUSTANG GT: 138

Magazines inconsistancies crack me up...thats where I get most of my info from too on things like top speed and braking since there's not a real effect way to evaluate it in the real world...I just pulled out the issue you're talking about and compared with other LT1 tests there's a 10mph difference, thats pretty big if you ask me.
