I was thinking about this "loose" clearance too!
Thinking to myself, "damn...I'd hate to see what a tight motor would do"!!
Or he's running gear oil in it!

hmm i was thinkin this spring was the problem in my car also anyone else agree i have about the same symptoms but i have a stock pump and tight clearences
when i hit it i go to about 60psi and start to climb to 70 75psi until about 5000 then i drop to 40 psi and start to clib back to 45-50 at 6500....i run valvoline 30 weight(reccomended by mechanic) with a ph1218 truck filter stock pump tight bottom end
what spring do you replace it with? and is it really bad to drop to 40psi...or should i be alright?

Update:
Spoke to the builder... motor's not really all that loose as we thought: .0018/.0020 rods and .0022 on the mains
So, that being said, looks like the HV pump wasn't necessary and of course, I also have that spring issue.
I think I'm going to replace the pump with a standard volume dilly and throw a GM white spring in there that seems to work well for everyone.

Yea, not loose!!!!! Those are factory clearances.
Get the one with the 3/4" pickup.
Call Melling and get the right spring. It may not be the white spring.
Pulling the pan twice for a spring isn't a good idea and ya probably don't need the practice.

Ya have no way of knowing if it goes below 40. It happens so quick the guage may not show it.
Try some 20W in it.

I'll still call Melling about the spring choice.

Re: Ugh, more oil pressure woes, pressure is dropping at WOT now..
I called Melling, they weren't much help, per my other post, they wanted me to send it back for their hipo HV unit, and didn't want to talk about springs. It'd be nice if it were built off an M55A pump, but the M55 w/ the white spring gives 80lbs of pressure from what I've read, and accomplishes pretty much the same thing.. which should be more than enough I would hope!
It's an 8.250" pan pickup, I have an 8.250" pan... do brands standardize this stuff pretty well? ie, does a moroso 8.250" pan correspond with a Milodon 8.250" pan?

With 80PSI for short periods is maybe OK,but that much pressure with tight clearances will cut a groove all the way around the bearing just like as if the factory had done it. Been there.
Why don't ya send it back to Melling and get what they recommend??? Never heard of a HIPPO pump but that don't mean much.
Couldn't say on the pickup.

Re: Ugh, more oil pressure woes, pressure is dropping at WOT now..
It seems what Melling is recommending is just what I have now, but with better/stronger gears and a nicer casing. It's still an HV pump with a standard pressure spring. He didn't seem convinced that the pressure relief valve was opening, so I didn't give him much credit with what he was telling me. I did speak to their support department, not sales. I truly don't think this would solve the pressure relief opening.
It's this dilly here that they suggested:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...550&view=1&N=0
I could try the standard spring, or I could see if Moroso would be more helpful since it would be their product I'm buying afterall...
I don't want to do the work twice.. but as long as it comes out right.... I should correct myself on the 80psi spring.. it allows up to 80psi, that's the way those work I think..
