Re: Ugh, more oil pressure woes, pressure is dropping at WOT now..

Bret.. am I going to hurt anything by running that much oil pressure?

After about 1k miles I'm going to switch back to Mobil 1 10W30 and a regular filter, maybe I'll have some pressure drop?

I've already changed the oil about 3 or 4 times btw.. I was experimenting with oil viscosities. This is the oil w/ the most WOT passes tho, so I'm going to change this one out then hold out for my 10W30.

I kinda wish I'd kept my stock pan now instead of wasting $230 on this Milodon.. but oh well.

I'd even drop down to 5w-30 here on the next change. I don't think you need that much pressure.

It doesn't hurt but that HV pump is beating on the distributor gear (oil pump dirve gear) pretty badly now anyways.

So what you're saying is I should swap it to the standard volume or???....

I'd rather pull my intake manifold once every two years and replace my drive gear.. heh.

K, I'll exchange my Mobil 1 for some 5w30

Re: Ugh, more oil pressure woes, pressure is dropping at WOT now..

FWIW, I blueprint the pumps to have the max pressure that I am looking for and the idle low RPM pressure is set by my main clearances, the pump and oil viscocity. I like 40psi at idle and 55-60psi max along with the lowest grade (ie 0w-30, 5W-30) I can get to do that.

All gears can wear out BTW, the best is the composite gears but they don't come in the LT1 shaft size, but there are some ways around that (none that are cheap). The iron and bronze gears can both easily wear out.

Bret

PS Have a good Memorial Day!

Cool Bret, I'll play around with viscosities and go from there. Maybe I'll keep that standard vol pump and whenever I get around to doing a bmr kmember I'll swappy swappy pumps!

Happy Memorial Day to you as well!

so what was the reason that less oil helped your pressure? i dont thnk that would be my problem..

Excessive windage in the crankcase. Too much oil = crank slapping the oil in the pan causing it to either foam up or add air into the system causing a pressure drop at high RPM.

I don't know the details on your oiling system so I won't be able to help much

think it would help with a stock pan? i have tight clearenced and a stock pump but it drops pressure above 4k....i run valvoline straight 30 weight and im in tx 100 degrees daily

Daniel, do you not have the stock windage tray in there???

This symptom can happen if you have too little or too much oil in the pan, but if you don't have a windage tray (even the stock one) you can have this problem at anytime.

yes i do...the oil pan has no modifications...i use a ph1218 truck filter and have the stock oil cooler(soon to be gone) and put in 5 quarts of valvoline 30 weight about every 1000 miles

Daniel I'm not familiar with your setup...

Stock bottom end? Have you replaced the pump / messed with it at all? Proper height to the pickup tube?

Is the motor eating that much oil up? If not the more oil you pour in the bottom end the worse off it gets.

That's not good at all...

Like Asked above is it really going through that much or are you just adding it? That seems excesive...

I'm hoping he means oil changes every 1k.. which is excessive.. but I hope it's not consuming all that!
