Water pump install question...

I'm pulling my old waterpump out and getting ready to put the new one in.

Some questions...

1. One bolt was really tough to get out due to coolant/rust. It was tight the entire way out. Should I run a tap through the threads to clean them out so I don't break the bolt when putting it back in?

2. What should I put on these bolts? Teflon tape? Heard about thread sealant...is that liquid stuff?

3. Should I change the little o-rings on the shaft coupler?

Thanks for your help...

1.) I would try the bolt first and if its feels like its going to start stipping the threads, try the tap.

2.) Liquid Gasket maker, theres special stuff for it, just go look at the parts store.

3.) Dont bother unless they look bad.

That would work, but it would be best to get an actual thread sealer from the parts store....

Re: Water pump install question...

Use thread sealant not RTV on the bolts. RTV can get into the cooling system and clog things up.

I would say as long as one is extremely conservative with the RTV usage on the threads then no problems will abound. I've always used RTV w/out a problem.
I really don't think there's enough clearence between the block threads and bolt threads to let in any significant amount of RTV to be a problem.

Re: Water pump install question...

Well I'm glad we're all in agreement ;-) I ended up using a small amt of RTV on the bolts. Not enough to get into the system.

Yeah I ran a tap thru the holes and cleaned the garbage out...Glad I did cause those bolts went in like butta.

If you don't use it, then you never have to worry about it. Thread sealant is made for the job.

Understood... I really don't think there's enough clearence between the block threads and bolt threads to let in any significant amount of RTV to be a problem.
Whenever I've pulled a bolt that's had sealant the threads are clean.
I guess you don't want to read what I used on my head bolts, eh?
