water pump temp sensor

Hey !! The temp sensor on the water pump of my '96 LT1 is leaking. I took the sensor out and of course it poured coolant over and down, on the freakin' opti. The temp guage seemed to be reading fine, the sensor just leaked coolant. Is this a clean the sensor, wrap with plumbers tape and re-install or buy a new sensor ? I've been searching but have'nt come across this yet and I'm getting a little excited.
Thanks

This sensor is not for the gauge but the pcm. The one for the gauge is in the side of the engine. If it is leaking from not being tight enough or installed incorrectly it might be able to be fixed. You can try to fix it but the part was only $29 for my car and was getting old anyways and I didn't want any leaks so I replaced it to be safe.

Check the threads in the WP to make sure they aren't damaged. I've used both Teflon tape and thread sealant with no problems.

Thank you for the replys. I think what happened is the sensor backed out just a tiny bit and started a very small leak. I tried to find an A/C Delco sensor last night but only the discount parts suppliers were open so no deals. I was not going the no name route and the sensor I had was Delco and appeared to be in good shape so I cleaned it and put on the teflon tape and tried to dry the threads in the waterpump, which looked brand new, whew ! I put it back together and everything appears dry which makes me happy.
