Waterpump Question, About Remanufactured WPs
I just bought a remanufactured water pump, I took it out of the box and was inspecting it and I noticed that I could not turn the little gear spindal on the back that turns the pelar on the inside by hand. Is this normal for this type of water pump or is something wrong with it? I thought it should turn freely.

I think the anti corrosive stuff they put in them can make them stiff at first. If it concerns you protect the splines somehow and turn it with a pliers a little, bet once you move it once it loosens up a bit. I have over 50K on a NAPA reman that cost me $36. I have heard way too many stories about "new" GM ones not lasting a wekk and guys needing 3 before they got a good one.

My replacement GM pump has been on the car for 5 years and has outlasted the original by double the miles.
I guess there are experiences both ways.

Well I tried the pliers, and put as much force as I could without damaging the splines and it wouldn't budge. So I took the water pump back and exchanged it with a new unrebuilt one. I figured that if they couldn't get the bearing packed in right I don't won't any part of it. With my luck I would have had more problems down the road and be right were I am at now.
Anyways I got the new one and it turns freely by hand. Also the new water pump is much lighter than the rebuilt one?? and looks to be really good quality. Well I hope there is some nice weather this weekend so I can change it out.
Anybody know of any tips link on changing the waterpump out?
Thanks for the info.

Well I put the new waterpump on yesterday, everything went well. It ended up being an all day job, but it was done right. I would have to say that the hardest part of the job was scraping the old gasket material off of the block. Getting a razor blade down in the confined space and trying to do something with it was hard, and the most time consuming.
It sure did beat paying $650.00 dollars to the Chevy dealer for putting the waterpump on!
