I need to install a new water pump. Mine has a very small leak that is causing my belt to get wet which is making my power steering week.

Anyone having luck with remanufactured water pumps? Anything else to look out for with this install? I hope its as simple as the typical wp removal and install.

Do not get water on the opti!!!!!!!!!!! I would probly go remanufactured if there was a big price differance. It's not that bad to change, I've had mine off and on probly 10 times. There are six bolts, one of which is behind your air pump. (not behind mine, I don't have one)

I planned on wrapping up my opti with saran wrap or something to keep the coolant off. I dread ever having to pay out on a new opti

get a CSI or Mezerie electric WP and pick up some hp while you're at it

What have you found to be the disadvantages of the electric water pump, besides longevity?

I thought I remembered reading about some issues with the electric pump not cooling as well, etc....

my meziere works fine, and if it ever does break, it's EASY to change. I'd recomend electric

I pefer new AC Delco due to it's location over the opti.. I feel it's a better made pump..

At least with the b-bodies the NAPA remans have a better track record than the "new" GM ones and cost less than a third as much. The GM ones seem to leak as soon as they are installed for too many people my guess is they have been sitting in a warehouse too long. Another option is AutoZone has a lifetime warranty one for about half the cost of the "new" GM ones.

I got a reman from Autozone for 60 bucks and when i turned my old one in i got 15$ back. The bearing, and seals around the metal elbows are about the only things that can leak (thermostat and gaskets can leak too which you will be replacing anyhow). They told me they replace the bearing and the metal elbows and also the spinner blade thing. They then inspect it.

My old pump was leaking through the bearing and i was able to turn the pump by hand easily. The new one had a brand new bearing that was very stiff and i could only turn it with pliers so i know it was replaced.

Who knows maybe you will get lucky and get mine. Overall, i was happy with the reman, worked fine, no leaks, cooling works good, and i dont get misfires anymore.

You thank yourself... may have not as long of a life time... but I'd be damned if it's not easier to change... WP removal isn't hard... but it's "VERY" annoying.. because of the fluids involved.

Nobody has mentioned the great advantage that electric has over mechanical.

The electrics do not leak when they go bad

(but they do leave you stranded)

I would rather have the slow leak failure mode than the stop spinning like an electric. Opti wetting is not anywhere near as bad as many seem too think, mine has been doused a few times in Dexcool(another one of those things that gets an undeserved bad rap) and is fine. A tip for all is to take a little of that grease you get with plugwires and coat the weatherpack seal at the opti wiring harness, that is where it is most vulnerable to water getting in, the grease will help seal it up tight.
